Training, coaching, mentoring, education, but what’s the job to be done?

“An intelligent fool can make something more complicated than it needs to be”. “If you can’t explain something simply enough, you don’t understand it well enough”. “You can’t solve a problem with the same thinking that created it”. And “if the ability to climb a tree is a measure of intelligence, a fish will go it’s whole life believing it is stupid”. All 4 comments are attributed to one person, each of the 4 comments directly relates to one of the job roles above more so than the others. If you are struggling to work out which job the comments relate to, that may be because they all do the same job, just do the job differently.

In Theory

If it sounds so good in theory

There is a simple answer to that. It is because you don’t know how to apply it to new situations. Or, maybe you don’t know when and where to apply parts of the theory, as another option? Or applying theory in isolation to other theory… etc., etc. But is that making things bigger and more complex than things are in reality? If you are thinking “what’s wrong with that?!”, please, keep reading

How you can fill jobs using international students as part of their course.

Not only do employers in the tourism and hospitality sector in Australia rely heavily on international tourists as customers to survive, but a large part of the workforce in this industry was also made up of international students or backpackers who are no longer here on working holiday visas. This is a problem for all Australians now, not just visa holders, regional areas, and employers. If it’s not addressed now, even if the borders open tomorrow the Australian economy will have to postpone its recovery if it doesn’t have enough people to operate.

Money, cost, price, or value: what are students willing to pay?

It seems that people in the formal VET sector are themselves poor learners if they are now stuck on the TAEtanic and have not learned from other industries. Think about import tariffs or sub-prime loans for the manufacturing and banking industry, and their effect on the Australian economy. Particularly ones that have a ready-made replacement product of higher quality? How long do you think that industry will still exist in the real world that the rest of Australia lives in? During a global pandemic, do you think the government is going to save any industry?…

Turnaround of the Vet Sector: where are you at?

While COVID-19 created a crisis for many businesses, it certainly was not unprecedented. This article written largely about the business created in the “greed is good” era (of the 80’s), gave large companies that survived the 1997 stock market (mini) crash a way to thrive until the tech bubble burst a couple of years later (in 2000). However, by then businesses learn to adapt. The ones that didn’t fell victim to natural selection and were either eaten or died a slow and painful death. Then we had the CFG 10 years before COVID-19, caused (generally) by reputable financial institutions bundling up poor quality products that would actually cost money (known as sub-prime loans) with a facade of high-quality products. It was not illegal, and people didn’t know what to look for. After all, it was a safe as houses, that didn’t exist, more so customers that didn’t exist when the housed needed to be sold. And the government would not let them fail… until they did. Back to the future, after COVID-19, add in the term “Sub-prime learning”, then see if you can pick where the formal, non-formal, and informal learning segments of the VET sector are in this process?

Could things get any worse for the VET Sector?

It is often said there is no such thing as a stupid question. However, as people don’t know what they don’t know, stupid answers do exist. For the smallest and most protected segment of the VET sector in Australia, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), it may seem like a stupid answer that it couldn’t get any worse. But the fact is, the RMS TAEtanic hit an iceberg 2 years ago that has sealed the fate. For many RTOs and consultants in the training industry who are still placing a bet that the RMS TAEtanic won’t sink, it could get worse, if it does sink (more so when). But it is not all bad news for RTOs, the formal VET sector has been primed for a hostile takeover of the segment by L&D and informal learning providers (business consultants etc…) for a while now…

6 Other options to work in the VET sector

6 “Other” options to work in the VET sector The first misconception that needs to be cleared up for the general public is that the Vocational education and training, or VET for short, is more than just Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). It is a tertiary education pathway that enables individuals to gain qualifications for employment. By Brett O’Connor The formal VET system includes RTO, Universities, and Schools. However, this is just one learning system in the VET sector in Australia and is the smallest of the three learning systems. It is the type of learning that the government has the most control over through regulation of the AQF that sets the conditions for formal qualification recognized by the Australia government.“The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the policy for regulated qualifications in the Australian education and training system. The AQF was first introduced in 1995 to underpin the national system of qualifications in Australia, encompassing higher education, vocational education and training (VET), and schools. The AQF is the agreed policy of Commonwealth, State and Territory ministers.” Where does it say that the VET sector is more than just RTOs?!? Actually, it says it in the Glossary of terms in the Standards…

Core sensitivities: How Narcissists control the training in the VET sector in Australia

I am not offering to diagnose you. If that’s what you are really looking for you can talk to your GP who can put you on a mental health plan to do that. Nor do I care if you are a narcissist or not. Nor am I saying it is a negative to be a narcissist. It would seem likely to to me is you are still reading you have not had your core sensitivities triggered yet. There are many benefits to acting like a narcissist, and millions of people pay big money each year to learn how to do it. So we are not going to judge them for doing that either. The absence of an illness doesn’t mean you are healthy. So, if you are thinking “… but I know I’m not a narcissist!” … do you? If the cap fits as “they” say. Even though only a small percentage of the population are actually a Narcissist, narcissism ingrained into all humans’ nature … to make sure we are all on the same page, lets start with what narcissism is…
